NJ City Sued For Reverse Discrimination by Firefighter Candidates

Nine prospective firefighters who were offered jobs with the City of Englewood, New Jersey have filed suit claiming the last minute decision to withdraw the job offers constituted breach of contract and reverse discrimination. A Mississippi fire chief is among three local officials who claim they were fired by the city of Clarksdale last year on account of their race. Fire Chief Obert Douglas along with Municipal Judge Joseph Cobb Gibbs, and City Attorney Curtis Boschert were fired on July 10, 2017, ten days after Mayor Chuck Espy took office.

NJ City Settles Reverse Discrimination Suit for $450k

A New Jersey city has settled a contentious dispute with a deputy chief that resulted in three separate lawsuits and an investigation by the local prosecutor’s office. The City of Plainfield has agreed to pay Deputy Chief Jeffrey Courtney $450,000 in exchange for his agreement to dismiss two suits he has pending, dismiss a pending workers comp claim, and retire.

Detroit Firefighter Fired Over Watermelon Gift Suing For Discrimination

The Detroit firefighter who was fired last October because he brought a watermelon as a gift to African American firefighters at his new firehouse, has filed suit alleging reverse discrimination. Robert Pattison filed suit yesterday naming Fire Commissioner Eric Jones, Deputy Commissioner Charles Simms, and Chief of Training Alfie Green.

Wilmington Settles Reverse Discrimination Claims

The City of Wilmington has agreed to settle the claims of five white firefighters who allege they were the victims of reverse discrimination in the enforcement of the city’s residency rule. Jonathan Hitch, Stephen Sherlock, Adam Risden, James Grieco, and Thomas Cunningham, filed a complaint with the EEOC in 2016.

A Cleveland firefighter who claims he was forced to resign after his complaints about a hostile work environment were mishandled, has filed suit claiming the department leadership discriminated against him because he is white. Reverse Discrimination Alleged in FDNY Medical Officer Promotion

Two FDNY physicians have filed suit against the city claiming they were passed over for a promotion on account of their race and age. Both doctors are white and in their 60s. Dr. Mark Spadaro and Dr. Ann Marchesano have served as City Medical Specialists for FDNY since 2007. Both are board certified physicians and each have over 30 years of experience.

Akron Fire’s Promotional Paralysis Case Settled

A nine-year long dispute that has held up promotions in the Akron Fire Department is finally over with news that the city has agreed to pay 23 firefighters $1.04 million in back pay and interest. The suit, Howe et al v. City of Akron, was filed in November, 2006 by 31 firefighters alleging that a 2004 promotional test was discriminatory against black candidates for lieutenant and white candidates for captain.
