Former Washington Recruit Accused in Noose Incident Now Sued by Fire Department’s Insurer

A former recruit firefighter who resigned after being accused of placing a noose around the neck of an African American colleague, is now being sued by the insurance company for the fire department. The former Clark County Fire District 6 recruit, John Erickson, was sued by the victim of the racist assault, Elijah Page.

FDNY Firefighter Sues Alleging Race Discrimination and Retaliation

An FDNY firefighter who claims he was racially harassed and physically assaulted at a firehouse celebration, has filed suit in federal court alleging race discrimination and retaliation against the city. Alonzo Baker filed suit today in US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department has prevailed in its appeal of a $1.1 million verdict granted in 2013 to an African American firefighter. Jabari Jumaane sued the city in 2003 claiming race discrimination, racial harassment, and retaliation.

Noose Incident Prompts Apologies, Demotion, and a Lawsuit

A white assistant chief in Indiana who threw a noose to a black firefighter during a knot tying exercise has been demoted to firefighter. The incident has also prompted a race discrimination suit by the black firefighter. Former Marion Fire Department Assistant Chief Rick Backs created the noose during a training exercise last February exercise and reportedly threw it toward firefighter Mikel Neal. The incident sparked racial tensions in the city of Marion that brought back recollections of lynchings that occurred as late as the 1930s.
