Nebraska Firefighter Awarded $1.2 million For Retaliation

The first of three Nebraska firefighters who are suing the City of Lincoln, has been awarded $1.2 million by a federal court jury. Captain Troy Hurd claims he was subjected to a series of disciplinary charges by ranking officers after he complained about instructors harassing recruits on the basis of their gender and national origin.

Nebraska Captain Claims He was Victim of Retaliation

A Lincoln, Nebraska fire captain who claims he has been subjected to retaliation since he reported the harassment of recruits in 2011, has filed suit in federal court. Troy Hurd filed suit in US District court last Friday against the City of Lincoln and six ranking officers in the fire department.

Curt Varone has over 45 years of fire service experience and 35 as a practicing attorney licensed in both Rhode Island and Maine. His background includes 29 years as a career firefighter in Providence (retiring as a Deputy Assistant Chief), as well as volunteer and paid on call experience. He is the author of two books: Legal Considerations for Fire and Emergency Services, (2006, 2nd ed. 2011, 3rd ed. 2014, 4th ed. 2022) and Fire Officer's Legal Handbook (2007), and is a contributing editor for Firehouse Magazine writing the Fire Law column.
