California Utility Settles With US Forest Service for $80 Million

Southern California Edison has agreed to pay the US Forest Service $80 million in damages to settle a suit related to the Thomas Fire. The fire burned more than 280,000 acres in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties in 2017, including roughly 150,000 acres of national forests.

Fire Agencies Seek Over $120 Million in Damages for Two California Wildland Fires

Two wildland fire related lawsuits are in the Fire Law headlines, brought by the nation’s two largest wildland firefighting agencies, the US Forest Service and CalFire. The US Forest Service filed suit against Southern California Edison and Utility Tree Service over the Bobcat Fire in 2020.

Fire Department Sues Contractor Over Use of Toxic Fill at Firehouse

A New York volunteer fire company has filed a toxic tort suit against the contractors who were responsible for using contaminated fill during the construction of a new firehouse. The Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. filed suit in federal court against John J. Adorno, John J. Adorno, Inc. d/b/a Universal Construction, and Metro Green, LLC, seeking at least $1.75 million in damages.

The City of Los Angeles has filed suit against Clean Up America over the costs of battling a trash fire that took six weeks to fully extinguish. The company operates a recycling center that had a trash pile 25 feet high, 252 feet long and 250 feet wide, with an estimated 22 million pounds of trash.

Oregon Seeking To Recoup Over $40 Million in Wildland Fire Costs From Responsible Parties

The State of Oregon is pursuing the people it considers responsible for causing three wildland fires that cost the state over $40 million to fight. The largest of the three claims was filed against Dominic Decarlo and Cloyd Deardorff, who are accused of accidentally starting the Stouts Creek Fire with a mower on July 30, 2015.
