Class Action Lawsuit Blames Utilities for Deadly Maui Wildfire

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Maui Electric Company, Limited, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc., and Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. alleging they bear responsibility for the tragic Lahaina Fire on the Island of Maui. At present at fire has claimed at least 99 lives, destroyed 2700 buildings, burned over 2,000 acres and caused damages estimated at over $5 billion.

Former Tennessee Firefighter Sues Under FLSA

A Tennessee firefighter who resigned earlier this month has filed a class action lawsuit under the FLSA claiming he and his colleagues were being improperly compensated. Seth Stafford filed suit against the City of Mt. Juliet last week alleging the city “failed to pay its employee firefighters for all time worked, including failing to pay such employees the overtime wages they are owed under the law.”

Louisiana Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Firefighters in Pension Battle

Firefighters in Kenner, Louisiana have prevailed at the state Supreme Court on whether certain types of compensation should be included in their pension compensation. The suit was filed in 2010 by Michael Dunn as a class action. The complaint was later amended eliminating the class action, adding individual named firefighters as plaintiffs and positioning IAFF Local 1427 as representing the interests of its members.

GA Supreme Court Upholds Pension Contribution Increases for Firefighters

The Supreme Court of Georgia handed Atlanta firefighters, along with other city workers, a loss in their bid to challenge significant increases to their pension contributions. Police, firefighters and city workers filed a class action suit in 2013 seeking to block the city’s attempt to increase their pension contributions by at least 5%, and up to an additional 10% depending on how much the city has to increase its contributions.

Indiana Ambulance Company Faces FLSA Class Action Suit

An Indiana EMT has filed a class action lawsuit against an ambulance company he worked for claiming the company routinely violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by requiring personnel to work in excess of 40 hours per week without paying overtime. Steven Schroers filed suit last week in US District Court for the Northern District of Indiana against Prompt Medical Transport, Inc. and three of its senior managers.

Tampa Ordered to Pay $1 Million in 13th Check Pension Case

The City of Tampa has been ordered to pay $1 million in costs in a class action lawsuit filed by a retired Tampa firefighter. John Parker filed the suit claiming that in 2004 the city’s police and fire pension board failed to provide retirees with benefits under special provision known as a “13th Check Program.”

Savannah Captains Sue Over Pay Differential
