Newport Navy Fire Department Cited By Inspector General For Fraudulent Training Records

An Inspector General’s investigation into training records at the Newport Naval Station Fire Department has revealed widespread fraud and lack of compliance training requirements. The report dated June 9, 2017 has only recently become publicly known.

The Inspector General was tipped off to the problem in June, 2016 by a whistleblower within the fire department, Firefighter George W. Haywood, Jr. The comprehensive investigation revealed that firefighters were routinely given credit for classes they had not attended, and not required to participate in training mandated by the Department of Defense.

While the investigation was going on the department’s training officer “separated from employment with CNIC” and the fire chief retired.
