Family of Murdered LA County Firefighter Receives $7.2 Million Settlement

The family of a Los Angeles County firefighter who was shot and killed by a disgruntled colleague in 2021, will receive a settlement of $7.2 million. Tory Carlon was shot and killed by firefighter Jonathan Patrick Tatone at LA County Station 81 on June 1, 2021.

Carlon and Tatone worked on different shifts at station 81, had a longstanding dispute that left Carlon concerned for his safety. At the time of the shooting, Carlon was on duty, and Tatone was off-duty. After murdering Carlon, Tatone shot and severely injured Captain Arnoldo V. Sandoval, returned to his home, set it ablaze, and shot himself.

Carlon’s family alleged the fire department was aware of Tatone’s violent tendencies, yet failed to adequately protect Carlon from him. The county settled a similar suit with Captain Sandoval for $2.6 million.

Here is more on the story.
