Neighbor’s Video Sparks Professional Standards Investigation for Police and EMS

Curt Varone has over 50 years of fire service experience and 40 as a practicing attorney licensed in both Rhode Island and Maine. His background includes 29 years as a career firefighter in Providence (retiring as a Deputy Assistant Chief), as well as volunteer and paid on call experience. Besides his law degree, he has a MS in Forensic Psychology. He is the author of two books: Legal Considerations for Fire and Emergency Services, (2006, 2nd ed. 2011, 3rd ed. 2014, 4th ed. 2022) and Fire Officer's Legal Handbook (2007), and is a contributing editor for Firehouse Magazine writing the Fire Law column.

  1. You know I have a few feelings on this. First why didn’t they either walk him down the stairs or, if he couldn’t walk, put him on the stretcher or stairchair. It does look ridiculous to be bringing him down that way. That being said, that lady has no idea what was going on prior to her putting her camera to use. She caught what had happened possibly after he did what was in the police report. He didn’t look to beat up at the end of that video.

  2. Good points Jason. If nothing else it is a reminder that we all need to remember that we are being filmed on a regular basis – and act accordingly.
